kothar
My thesis project, Kothar, is an attempt to address the issue raised in my thesis paper. My thesis statement was/is: "While some believe that technology has been suitable for communication design by democratizing it, technology has contributed to a proliferation of monotonous design". And how the rise of social media and templet tools, such as Canva, have allowed for more accessible design, while also contributing to the loss of individualized communication.
Problem
Online digital communication has become monotonous. In other words, everything has started to look the same. For more detail, here his my thesis paper that outlines it a bit further.
Solution
The goal for this app is to learn what one is creating and looking at. This is not a design app, this is not going t help you create anything. This is so you learn and understand what is going on and how you fit into the big picture of online behavior and communication.
Who Was Kothar
In 1928 the forgotten city Ugarit was found. This ancient city is located in what is now modern-day Syria. It was an important center of trade and culture during the Bronze Age. Ugarit was first settled in the early Bronze Age, around 6000 BCE, making it one of the oldest reported cities in the world. However, it was during the Late Bronze Age, between 1500 and 1200 BCE, that Ugarit reached its peak as a major economic and cultural center. They trade with other civilizations such as Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Cyprus. The people of Ugarit spoke a Semitic language and developed their own writing system, known as Ugaritic, which is one of the earliest known alphabets. The Ugaritic texts, which include religious, legal, and administrative documents, provide valuable insights into the culture and history of the city. Ugarit was also an important religious center, with a pantheon of gods and goddesses that included Baal, El, Asherah, Anat, and Kothar-wa-Khasis. Kothar-wa-Khasis is where the app derives it’s name from, due to him being the god of craftsmanship, wisdom, and magic. In other words, Kothar was the OG good of design and creating.

Black Box
I made a black-box-shaped exhibit at the MET museum to bring more attention not only to the app, but also to Ugarit, a city that has been forgotten. The written down sound is a 4,000-year-old Sumerian clay tablet, while the oldest melody is considered to be "Hurrian Hymn No. 6," an ode to the goddess Nikkal written in cuneiform by the ancient Hurrians around the 14th century B.C.. The ancient tablet and the "Hurrian Hymn No. 6" both come from a place near Ugarit. Therefore, making the hymn a great song for the black box.
